Alberta Penstemon (Penstemon albertinus) is a cold-tolerant prolific blooming Penstemon that is found in the northern portion of the intermountain West. Alberta Penstemon’s native range includes British Columbia and Alberta, down to Idaho and Montana. Given its range, growers can expect this plant to be hardy to USDA zone 3.
Alberta Penstemon grows best in areas with full sun, and is often found in dry rocky fields and open slopes. Drought tolerant once established, this penstemon has low water use and is considered water-wise. Well-drained soil is essential for planting success.

In the summer months (May - August) you can find blooms ranging from blue to purple on clustered stems that arise from a woody root crown. This penstemon sends up stems that are 8 - 16 in tall and die back after blooms are spent.
This penstemon’s large, oval leaves are evergreen, but if deprived of sufficient water they may turn a deep purple.
Plant Alberta Penstemon in your garden with Sulphur Buckwheat, Blanketflower, and Common Yarrow for a show of bright colors and prolific pollinators.
