Vertical Integration & Provenance

Immediate Ecological Value

Our expertise is built on decades of industry-leading experience. Carrying forward the lineage of Bitterroot Restoration, we produce plant material tested in harsh, low-water conditions. These plants are not just "retail-ready"—they are genetically programmed to thrive in the high-altitude and arid climates of the West.

We carry forward a lineage of 30+ years in ecological expertise. For projects requiring local-ecotype accuracy, we offer site-specific sourcing and custom propagation, ensuring your finished material is genetically appropriate for the Intermountain West.

Finished plants provide instant food and shelter for pollinators, stabilize soil immediately upon transplant, and require significantly less chemical input and maintenance than non-native ornamentals.

Proven Capability & Capacity

We grow over 500,000 native plants annually at our 13-acre production hub in Corvallis, MT. Our capacity allows us to meet the demands of major developments—such as the 280,000+ plants recently delivered for the Park at Expo 2026 in Boise—as well as the recurring needs of regional wholesale nurseries and garden centers.

Sourcing, Seed, & Provenance

We specialize in the "in-between" spaces: wetland transitions, streamside plantings, and upland shrub buffers. When projects demand strict fidelity to place, we offer site-specific seed and cutting collection, cleaning, and storage. This vertical integration ensures that our finished plants maintain the genetic integrity necessary for long-term survival in native habitats.

Native Finished & Retail Plant FAQs

How does GBNP’s restoration heritage impact the quality of retail-ready stock?

We are the "grand baby" of Bitterroot Restoration, carrying forward 30+ years of ecological expertise. Unlike traditional nurseries that prioritize rapid, fertilizer-driven growth for short-term aesthetics, our finished plants are restoration-driven. We prioritize root architecture and regional hardiness over artificial height. This results in containerized stock that establishes faster and survives the high-altitude, low-humidity transition into Western landscapes.

What specific container sizes are available for wholesale and retail-ready orders?

Our finished material is offered in three primary industry-standard sizes to accommodate both retail floor displays and professional landscape installations: 5" Pots: Ideal for high-density perennial and graminoid displays. 1 Gallon Pots: The workhorse size for shrubs, trees, and established perennials. 2 Gallon Pots: Designed for projects requiring immediate architectural structure and maturity. (Note: For restoration-scale ground coverage, we also produce 7ci and 10ci liner plugs.)

Can GBNP handle large-scale municipal or federal supply contracts?

Yes. We have the proven infrastructure to deliver at massive scale, producing over 500,000+ native plants annually. Our track record includes delivering 280,000+ native forbs, grasses, and shrubs for the Park at Expo 2026 in Boise. We are also a trusted partner for federal agencies, providing custom propagation from client-provided seeds for Grand Teton National Park and Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Why is the September–February pre-order window critical for retail partners?

Liner production typically includes the core functional groups used in western restoration work: native grasses, sedges and rushes, flowering forbs, and a range of shrubs suited to upland, riparian, and wetland environments. Availability changes throughout the year as crops are propagated, grown, and shipped, so the most accurate list of species and quantities is always maintained on Great Bear’s wholesale availability page.

Why is the September–February pre-order window critical for retail partners?

Native plant propagation is a seasonal, precision-based process that often requires cold stratification and specific germination cycles. To guarantee availability for the spring peak, independent garden centers and wholesale nurseries must place pre-orders during this window. This allows us to reserve stock and schedule production before the regional inventory is depleted.

Does GBNP offer site-specific sourcing for projects requiring genetic accuracy?

Yes. Fidelity to place is a core service. We provide expert seed and cutting collection, cleaning, and storage for projects requiring local-ecotype accuracy. We can propagate finished material from seed collected directly from your project area—including federal lands—to ensure the plants are perfectly adapted to the specific soil, moisture, and microclimate of your site.
